In this short music film, starting from Beethoven's song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, baritone and actor Michael Wilmering takes on no fewer than seventeen different characters. These portraits of seventeen characters (and one dog) explore everyday escapism as well as the desire for the unattainable here and now. How do we fill the voids in our lives, how do we know we exist and what informs our sense of time? Maybe we can find a way out by looking a bit further than is comfortable... La bohème // In the original opera, this story begins with two artists who are so poor that they burn their self-written play only to be warm for a few moments in their cold apartment on Christmas eve. In our version these two live in a huge penthouse rented by their parents. On this night they have opened all the windows and walk around in their boxer shorts. Out of pure boredom, they burn up their just finished play and right after that the laptop that it was written on. They are not poor in this version. They are rich kids who have everything but who are poor in another way: They have too much. Too many choices, too much freedom and they are paralysed by the decadence of their existence. When his friends go off to a restaurant, Rodolpho stays behind. He tries to write something but has no inspiration. Then Mimi comes at the door. Immediately something changes. Mimi is different. She has a strong life energy about her which sweeps Rodolpho off his feet. Their love rises above any kind of bored nihilism. But as the piece continues we start to understand what's really going on with Mimi and how Rodolpho, the spoiled, protected kid, will deal with reality punching him in the face....

About Pierrot Lunaire. Moonstruck Intoxication is a double bill of Schönbergs masterpiece Pierrot Lunaire and the monodrama Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot by Maxwell Davies created by Operafront and the New European Ensemble for the Chamber Opera Festival Zwolle. The 21 poets that form Pierrot Lunaire, describe an absurdistic dreamed world in which the commedia dell’Arte figure Pierrot Lunaire plays the main role. The piece consists of three parts. The first seven poems describe a state of so called ‘moon sickness’. They express unfulfilled longing, past hope, a fresh sorrow for love that has disappeared. The middle part is extremely black in its images. It starts with a description of the sun being murdered by gigantic moths. It feels like you are being torn into a deep depression. We hear about desecration of a grave, a bloody communion wafer, and the gallows as a last lover. Then, in the third part, there seems to be a grand kind of purification. The black texts make way for an absurdism that is almost childish in its description of the images.

Moonstruck intoxication
We see a woman, at night, alone in her bathroom. She is feeling sick of too much alcohol after a dramatic relationship crisis. The moon shines through a window inside and in her intoxication of wine and tears her thoughts start taking ever more absurdistic shapes. Then suddenly it isn’t clear anymore what is real and what is a dream. Her association comes to life. A naked woman falls out of her washing machine. Is this Pierrot? Slowly the bathroom gets the possibilities of a moon landscape. Nothing is what it seems. The woman gets drawn even deeper into the depts. By her alter ego. Through the caverns of her own mind, she gets drawn to the borderline between life and death, meaning and pointlessness of it all. But she gets drawn over that. Her Pierrot, her fool, her mirrored image, makes her look further than the tragic of her existence. From the perspective of the moon, all human problems seem negligible small and pathetic. From that position, they start playing with fate. They are children, laughing with astonishment about love and death and life.

Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot // Miss Donnithorne has really existed. She lived in Australia where she locked herself in her house for ever after being left at the altar by her groom. This woman (who was also the example for the character of Miss Havisham from ‘Great Expectations’ by Dickens) is the core of this monodrama of Maxwell Davies. We see her twenty years after her wedding day. She still has her wedding dress on and is sitting between the remains of her wedding cake which is, as the title is already presuming, in a extensive state of decay. In this unsavory setting, she sings eight songs using every extremity of vocal possibilities to carry out her drama. Maxwell Davies writes a tour de force of vocal effects, from Sprechgesang to classical singing, falsetto and screaming. Instrumentally she is helped by balloons, metronomes, rattles, a series of flutes together with more common instruments.

A clown with a broken heart wants to commit suicide. But in his attempts to hang himself he fails time after time in very clownish ways. He then grabs his nose and pulls it off, gets rid of his clowns clothes, in short; he de-clowns himself. He becomes a fallen clown, a cynical one, a human. This all happens in the ouverture and this cynical clown turns out to be Don Alphonso who then tries to teach the other characters his cynical view of the world through the famous bet. With success, for after the whole masquerade, the entire world, that seemed so perfect, de-clowns and becomes an average, imperfect one, a human one. Operafront's artistic team made this piece in Staatstheater Braunschweig where it was a favorite for both audience and press. Last january they made a more comprised version together with the students of the Dutch National Opera Academy and now Operafront will bring this production to the Grachtenfestival where it will play in the Stadsschouwburg with a sublime cast lead by José Miguel Esandi.

Waar in de beeldende kunst de discussie over de diversiteit inmiddels is opgepakt, lijkt de operawereld daar nog lang niet. Seksistische of racistische inhoud in opera’s wordt liever ontweken, verbloemd of met handige kunstgrepen ‘weg-geregisseerd’. Niet-witte makers zijn er nauwelijks en vrouwen zijn nog altijd in de minderheid. Het progressieve geluid vindt amper bestaansrecht binnen het 19e eeuwse machtssysteem. Bewerken van deze oude meesterwerken is volgens de meeste gatekeepers taboe; tekst en vooral muziek moeten onaangeroerd blijven. Voor gewaagd experiment is het operagenre eigenlijk te duur. Maar wie herkent zich nog in deze archaïsche vertellingen? Tegen wie praat de opera eigenlijk nog? En wat gebeurt er als ‘iemand anders’ eens het woord krijgt? In april 2018 trekken Operafront, CT Collective en De Balie samen op om ‘de opera’ in één week tijd verder te brengen. Op 14 april breken we het gesprek over de toekomst van de opera verder open met een Baliedebat. We gaan niet praten over óf er iets moet veranderen, maar over hoé we dit gaan doen. Van 16 tot 21 april krijgen vier bekende schrijvers en vier jonge makers de sleutel van het Compagnietheater om vijf dagen lang met zangers en acteurs de seksistische en het racistische trekjes uit de Zauberflöte te herformuleren. Op 21 & 22 april gaat de grote zaal van het Compagnietheater open en kan publiek komen kijken en luisteren naar Anousha Nzume, Minou Bosua, Camille Darby (US), Ngozi Anyanwu (US) als schrijvers en Nina Spijkers en Lisenka Heijboer als maker. Operfront's first world premiere! Caliban is a chamber opera written by the adventurous composer Moritz Eggert, based on the character of the same name from Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. A fairytale about power that raises questions about the monsters of our time. In a society ruled by success, beauty, talent and fame, there is little scope for the underdog; for someone who has never made it and probably never will. Caliban is the ultimate anti-hero. After being abandoned in the forest as a child, he leads a life of slavery. He has a huge inferiority complex, is not very smart and fails in his attempt to free himself. The sensitive monster Caliban has many different sides to him. He is both victim and perpetrator. He craves power, yet is a lonely child in search of love. He fights against the oppression of slavery, is tortured and then freed. He finds his God, plots his revenge and is captured and humiliated once again. In short, he is the very essence of opera material.
